Points of Interest


  • Pg. 69 paragraph 3

Students need to question their instructors, and not be afraid to ask for help. The only way to understand something is to ask someone who can answer. Teachers are there to answer any questions a student may have.


"Knowledge emerges only through invention and reinvention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry men pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other."



  • Pg. 69 Paragraph 5

Students need to learn from their teachers, but teachers also need to learn from their students. Human never stop learning, and teachers shouldn't think that they are done learning. It is important that we never think we know enough, we should always want more knowledge.


"Education must begin with the solution of the teacher-student contradiction so that both and simultaneously teachers and students."



  • Pg. 70 paragraph 3

Teachers should not oppress their students by using the typical banking system of teaching. They shouldn't change the their way of learning, or think to match the way the society thinks is acceptable.


"The oppressed are regarded as the pathology of the health society, which must therefore adjust these "incompetent and lazy" folk to its own patterns by changing their mentality."



  • Pg. 71 paragraph 3

Teachers need to relate to their students and understand where they are coming from. With out that kind of connection it is harder for the students to learn from their teacher. The teacher needs to work with the students instead of leaving them completely on their own, the teacher needs to be a guide.


"To achieve this, he must be a partner of the students in his relations with them."



  • Pg. 72 paragraph 3

Teachers should listen to their students and not just ignore anything they say. Teachers and students need to have a level of understanding and talk to each other to help the learning process.


"Yet only through communication can human life hold meaning."


Students can't just learn from sitting and memorizing, that need to experience and be active learners. We learn often times by doing, or acting it out.


"Populist manifestations perhaps best exemplify this type of behavior by the oppressed, who, by identifying with charismatic leaders, come to feel that they themselves are active and effective."

Students not only learn from their teachers, but from each other. They can work together to find solutions, because with team work you can often times accomplish more. Students can get different perspectives then just what their teacher says.


"Dialogical relations- indispensable to the capacity of cognitive actors to cooperate in perceiving the same cognizable object- are otherwise impossible."



  • Pg. 78 paragraph 1

Teachers can't think of themselves as better, or smarter then the students. They are learning just as much as the students are. Teachers can't think of themselves on a pedestal because everyone in the classroom is on the page.


"Problem posing education, as a humanist and liberating praxis, posits as fundamental that men subjected to domination must fight for their emancipation."



  • Pg. 74 paragraph 4

A student should be able to explain his opinion to the teacher and not feel like the the teacher isn't listening. A students opinion should be worth the teachers time, and students should be able to feel like their opinion is put into consideration.


"The students- no longer docile listeners- are now critical coinvestigators in dialogue with the teacher."

Students should think of themselves as committed to challenges. They need to think critically about the world around them and make connections.


"Their response to the challenge evokes new challenges, followed by new understandings; and gradually the students come to regard themselves as committed."



  • Pg. 77 paragraph 4

Teachers should teach reality. They should not try to sugar coat things, or keep their students from knowing all the angles of a situation.


"As the situation becomes the object of their cognition, the naive, or magical perception which produced their fatalism gives way to perception which is able to perceive itself even as it perceives reality, and can thus be critically objective about that reality."
