metaphorically speaking...

Ch. 3
I’ve never thought that saying something such as “I gave you that idea” was a metaphor. It is so common in everyday language, but when you break it down and look at an idea in terms of an object, it makes sense that it is a metaphor. Metaphors allow terms to be understood through each other. The two terms are not the same
Ch. 4
Orientation metaphors provide a serious of metaphors with the same concept. It is hard to think of what else to say instead of “high-energy particles” it just seems that the word high is the only word that gets the point across. Experimental basis makes “Unknown is Up” and “Good Is Up” different.
Ch. 5
The concept of better, more, and good can all be explained through the concept of up, and are part of a metaphorical system. “More is Up” has top priority in certain societies but not in others. The priority of metaphors differs in different subcultures. For instance, “Saving Money is Better” now takes priority over “Bigger is Better” when it comes to buying cars in today’s society. Also, more is better applies to most sports, but not in golf.
Ch. 6
The relationship between physical objects and experience is similar to the relationship of spatial orientation to orientation metaphors. I’m having a difficult time understanding the examples given in this chapter as metaphors. The metaphor “mind is a machine” makes more sense as a metaphor to me because I can actually see the comparisons. We view places and areas as containers without even realizing it.
Ch. 7
Personification gives human characteristics to nonhuman things. We understand things better when we can relate to them and analyze them in terms we can easily comprehend.
Ch. 8
Metonymy uses one entity to refer to another that is related to it. Synecdoche a part or piece of something stands for the whole object or being. We just look at peoples faces and can identify them. A metaphor conceives something in terms of another to understand. On the other hand, metonymy has one entity standing for another. The confusing part is that metonymy also serves to give an understanding. So what is the difference really?
Ch. 9
Time is found in a few different metaphors. Time can be viewed as moving while we are standing still, but it can also be seen as standing still while we pass through it. I still don’t understand from our discussion in class next week how other cultures don’t understand the concept of “wasted time.”
Ch. 10
Language contains literal expressions that are pieced together by metaphorical concepts. I found it interesting that ideas can be compared to various objects such as food, people plants, products, money, and fashions. It seems ridiculous that we can use all of these different metaphors to explain a concept.
Ch. 11
“Used parts” in metaphorical concepts are used because they can be easily seen. The unused parts make metaphors that create figurative language. These are the types of metaphors I am used to, but the book tells me that these are not the metaphors that we live by.
Ch. 12
I thought it was interesting that they brought up the question of whether there is any concept that is understood without the aid of another concept. During grade school, I had spelling words and would look up the definitions. My teacher would always emphasize that I couldn’t use the word or a form of the word in its definition because it isn’t truly defined.
Ch. 13
“Rational Argument Is War” is a concept that seems so obvious, but I completely overlooked it. An argument is like a battle in so many different ways such as attacking, defending, counterattacking, and retreating or surrendering. I guess the major different is the fact the argument is words instead of a physical battle like war. I don’t like war, but I like to argue my opinion. Is that hypocritical?

-That was a really low thing for you to do.
-Don't be so down on yourself.
-That was a waste of my life.
-They were getting into a fight.
-His future is looking up.
-I'm taking the dodge to go to the store.
-It's good to see a familiar face!
-I don't know if I'm feeling up to it.
