Metaphors We Live By

Chapter 3: "in allowing us to focus on one aspect of a concept a metaphorical concept can keep us from focusing on other aspects of the concept that are inconsistent with that metaphor" Is a main point of this chapter. I think this means that one aspect of the metaphor helps it be relatable to the other. i thought this chapter was really interesting because it showed how certain metaphors relate better to certain people because of their backgrounds. Certain cultures cannot relate to the same metaphors people in our culture can. i liked in this section how they gave the metaphor, Ideas are objects, Linguistic expressions are containers and communication is sending.

Chapter 4: "organizes a whole system of concepts with respect to one another" is a main point. I really liked the example of how up is associated with good. They gave so many examples to prove this that are interesting such as; Happy, Health, More, Status. This chapter as well showed how culture effects what we think about metaphors which was something I had never thought about.

Chapter 5: I thought the one main aspect of this was really cool. That aspect was how people who believe in 'God' think that he lives UP in the sky, and they think that the 'Devil' lives DOWN in the ground.

Chapter 6: I really enjoyed this chapter because it showed how as a culture we take ideas and make them tangible so its is easier for us to refer to. A good example of this is fear, patience, peace, hatred, and the mind. i think that the mind is a machine is a metaphor students use everyday and do not think of it. It also makes me think the mind is the most powerful machine someone will ever come in contact with. A question i had is in this chapter they say a girl ego is in her mind, is that true? I thought ego was a personality trait. I also enjoyed the part about how our visual field defines many container metaphors.

Chapter 7: "personification is one of the largest metaphors" is one main point. Such as "his religion prohibits him to drink." I really liked this section because it is funny when an idea/belief can shape someone's life choices. Just like how as a society we view inflation as being, that way we can view it as an advisory.

Chapter 8: "Instead, we are using one entity to refer to another that is related to it. this is called metonymy." I enjoyed this because it showed how when we talk about people such as; he is in dance, as the dance profession. We also do this with a face. That way we can refer to people by their face.

Chapter 9: The one main aspect I liked in this chapter is how we refer to life and love as a journey such as; our relationship is on the rocks. This is interesting because of how we treat things is how they end up. All journeys end, just like all relationships end.

Chapter 10: I really thought the main point of this chapter is how we will use ideas and compare that to very many things. Something I questioned is one the Love is Madness; notice how they only describe men being crazy over women and not vice versa.

Chapter 11: I felt this chapter was just recaping everything and this is saying with the metaphors we use come to life because when we compare them to living things they become alive.

Chapter 12: This chapter is saying how we can be in several metaphors at the same time such as you can be IN Illinois IN class and INsane just kidding, but you get the point. This typically works with container metaphors.

Chapter 13: This chapter had main points when talking about structural metaphors, such as in an argument how we always feel we have to win (an argument is a battle)
